Description: This analysis will primarily focus on the individual, non-group market. In order to plan for the impact that these currently uninsured individuals will have on the health insurance markets, it will be important to understand their costs relative to the costs for people already enrolled, for whom many health insurers have experience and data.

Description: Most actuarial explorations of increased longevity have, quite understandably, focused on its direct financial implications for things like health care costs, retirement systems, and social security or other public policy provisions. But future life extension has many other potential implications, both direct and indirect, for various socioeconomic factors, which in turn have the potential to affect the actuarial valuation of future risk contingencies. This paper examines a sampling of the socioeconomic issues emerging from the possibility of substantially increased longevity. Because of the complexity and interrelatedness of these issues, actuarial and risk modeling of this prospective environment could be a significant challenge.

Description: This is the third Intercompany Study of the Society of Actuaries Long Term Care Experience Committee. Available data was collected on policies issued between January 1, 1984 through December 31, 1999.

Description: Health care cost trends are a key ingredient that health care actuaries use in their practice. In collaboration with the Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI), the Society of Actuaries has put together a data extract for practicing health actuaries to be able to better understand historical trends and cost disruptors.

Description: A web page introducing a research report that analyzes experience transition rates between Long Term Care claim settings over the course of a claim.

Description: The Society of Actuaries has released the results of an initiative to produce Long Term Care basic experience rate tables for claim incidence, claim termination, and claim utilization. Three multiplicative models have been developed, one for each of three tables that will calculate rates that vary by a number of product and policyholder attributes. The resulting rates are a product of a base rates and factors for each of the product and policy holder characteristics that were determined to be significant drivers. A report describing the development, usage and limitations of the models and rates has been made available to accompany the models.
